CONTEXTILE 2012 – Contemporary Textile Art Triennial

It is imperative to further research and develop the Textile Art in Portugal. This is an area of Art which both artists and craftsmen from around the world greatly respect and invest in, and which is widely taught in art schools and promoted in international events.

Portugal (and Guimarães in particular) has a long tradition in textile production, both artisanal and industrial,  from the manufacture of yarn and fabric to that of all their derivatives and practical applications, such as clothing and household textiles.

The textile industry has experienced a structural change in the last decades, and some of the prestige it once had got lost in this process. It is for the arts to contribute to the creation of a new image of the textile industry. Creatives now have the ability to reclaim its importance and value. The textile industry is a vast and complex universe where worlds such as agriculture, industry and creativity are intertwined. The materials come from nature or from artificial and complex industrial processes involving machines, people and ideas. They are used for the mass production of “utilitarian objects” that are used everyday in our homes, in the workplace, in transports and in institutions. These objects are so familiar and we use them so often that we easily lose our critical and aesthetic perspective on them.

Textile Art observes, consumes, digests and deconstructs the textile universe, giving it back in the shape of photography, painting, sculpture and various other forms. The areas of textile tradition can not be watching from the sidelines, instead, they need to actively contribute towards this new attitude.

With these reflections in mind, we believe it is relevant to use textiles in new creative contexts, such as a major event that brings together artists, audiences, manufacturers and consumers, from Portugal and abroad, showing their works at the same time and place. It is also an opportunity to foster the development of networks necessary to modernise the image of Portuguese textiles.

Guimarães 2012, as the European Capital of Culture, and given its strategic geographic and economic position in the region, can not miss the opportunity to be part of this rethinking of the textile industry. This is the framework for the birth of the first edition of Contextile 2012 – Triennial of Contemporary Textile Art, which includes the CEC program to allow for a greater awareness of the event, and for its progressive and sustainable growth in future editions.

PROJECT

CONTEXTILE 2012 – CONTEMPORARY TEXTILE ART TRIENNIAL is an international  contemporary art event, in which textiles are the element of reference in the Reflection, Research and Creation, in the various forms of artistic expression and representation.

CONTEXTILE offers and aims to: Give visibility to Textile Art; mobilise and encourage artists to adopt an innovative and experimental approach to visual arts; becomea Creative Platform and a catalyst for debating ideas/projects, developing international networks, exchanging interdisciplinary and academic good practices.

In close connection with the areas of textile tradition, this Triennial aspires to be an eclectic space where the interaction between artists, creators, the community (citizens and local businesses) and the city that hosts the event is promoted, thus contributing to the process of diversification of the economy and of the cultural and creative industries of the regions.

By showing works of several artists, in various media and formats, CONTEXTILE further aims to promote the international recognition of a new generation of emerging artists who, reflecting on the diversity of currently existing artistic proposals, present a body of works worthy of recognition due to the possibility of occupying the same physical space, in an aesthetic and artistic coherence of the moment and opening the way to the acknowledgement of the textile industry and textile art.

In this first edition of CONTEXTILE we designed a triennial project based on a simple but balanced program, which includes the GUIMARAES 2012 – European Capital of Culture program, and which will be presented in various locations around the city and includes: an international exhibition, satellite exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops, conference and public art interventions .
